West Bengal Tourism Minister Krishnendu Narayan Choudhury today described as an accident the recent death of a CPI-M students' wing leader, who was arrested after a clash with police.
"It is an accident. It will not make any impact on the image of brand West Bengal. These type of incidents have happened in the past in Delhi and other parts of India," he said at the launch of a month-long tourism promotion campaign in West Bengal.
He alleged that during 34 years of Left rule a lot of blood has been shed in the state.
"Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's main message is that don't start fire or create a ruckus. Come together and work for the progress of Bengal.
"We well investigate and people who are guilty will be punished. Our CM wants development of Bengal and there are some people who are trying to malign the image of the state", he said.
On April 2, Sudipta Gupta died in a city hospital after SFI supporters had gathered in Rani Rasmoni area of the city in connection with a protest rally to demand holding of college union elections in the state.
According to police Gupta, a student of the Rabindra Bharati University, died after receiving an injury in an accident when he was taken in a bus after being arrested. But CPI-M alleged that he succumbed to injuries received in lathicharge by police.
