The three-day annual 'Shaheedi Jor Mela' began today in the memory of Guru Gobind Singh's two younger sons -- Zorawar Singh and Fateh Singh -- who were buried alive in a brick wall here.
Despite cold weather, devotees thronged to pay homage to the brothers at Gurudwara Thanda Burj where they were imprisoned; Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib where they attained martyrdom and Gurdwara Jyoti Saroop where they were cremated.
People also paid their obeisance to their grand mother Mata Gujri at Thanda Burj while the head priest of Jyoti Swarup Sahib, Bhai Harpal Singh, performed an 'ardas' (prayer) in their memory.
"Devotees also took dips in the holy tanks of the gurdwaras, visited stalls selling religious books and a painting exhibition organised by the Shiromani Gurudwara Parbhandhak Committee (SGPC)," a committee spokesman said, adding SGPC president Kirpal Singh Badungar also paid obeisance at Gurdwara Jyoti Swarup Sahib.
'Langars' mushroomed across the 'mela' area for devotees with majority of these community kitchens between gurdwaras Beewangarh, Jyoti Swarup Sahib, Shaheedan.
Tomorrow the mela will see conferences of almost all the political parties of the state and on the concluding day, December 27, a Nagar Kirtan will be taken out from the Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib to Gurdwara Jyoti Swarup.
Meanwhile, the district administration said it has already made all necessary arrangements for the safety and convenience of visiting devotees.
