A 24-year-old sharp-shooter, who had allegedly opened fire at a property dealer's office in Baba Haridas Nagar area in the capital recently, has been arrested, Crime Branch of Delhi Police said today.
The accused, identified as Pawan alias Pona, is the sharp-shooter of 'Vikas alias Vicky Jharodia Gang'. Jharodia along with his associates Udaibir Singh alias Kala and Virender alias Bholu attempted to kill ex-MLA Bharat Singh in 2012 but he survived despite sustaining bullet injuries.
Udaibir, Virender and their associates had carried out a similar attack recently in which Bharat Singh was killed. While Udaibir has been arrested, Virender is on the run.
"Pawan alias Pona was arrested on Monday when he had come to meet one of his accomplices at bus stand near Sir Chhotu Ram Polytechnic, Kanjhawala in the capital. One country-made pistol and two live cartridges were recovered from him," said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ravindra Yadav.
Vikas and his maternal uncle Virender had jumped parole and organised their own gang and started threatening businessmen and property dealers of south-west Delhi for extortion.
"Recently, their gang had demanded Rs 50 lakh as extortion amount from one Sarvar Kumar at CRPF Camp, Jharoda. When he denied, Vikas along with his associates opened fire at Sarvar's office to frighten him. They also threatened his mother that his son would be killed by the next morning," said Yadav.
