According to police, Tehrik Nifaz-e-Fiqa Jafferia Multan chapter president Allama Nasir Abbas was returning after attending a majlis (Shia gathering) in a car late tonight when four motorcyclists fired at it near Foreman Christian College.
Abbas, his driver and security guard suffered critical injuries and were taken to Sheikh Zayed Hospital where the Shia leader succumbed to his injuries.
A large number of people gathered at the hospital and chanted slogans against the rival sect, banned Sipaha Sahaba Pakistan (SSP), and demanded the arrest of the attackers at earliest.
"It is a sectarian attack and the government has failed to control ongoing spate of sectarian killing," Shia leader Hamid Ali said.
Since the killing of 11 people in sectarian clash in Rawalpindi district on November 15, many people, mostly Shia men, have been killed in Karachi and Lahore.
The Shia council has announced a three-day mourning.
