In a unique gesture, Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde today felicitated a few BSF personnel and their families who participated in the 1971 war side-by-side Army troopers to liberate Bangladesh.
Three families and one officer of the war veterans were handed over citations, shawl and Rs 50,000 for playing commendable role in the stellar victory of Indian forces over Pakistani Army.
The proposal to honour these families, during the investiture ceremony of the Border Security Force (BSF), was mooted by force chief Subhash Joshi and it was the first time that such an event was conducted.
Shinde called the awarding of these veterans a "commendable gesture" by the force which guards Indian borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh.
The BSF event was held today to mark the 97th birth anniversary of the forces' founding chief K F Rustamji.
