A cruise vessel docked at Western India Shipyard near Mormugao Port Trust in Vasco town ran aground today following ingress of water due to heavy rains despite concerted efforts by various agencies to save it.
"The ship, MV QING, owned by Trinity Leisure Private Limited grounded near Mormugao Port Trust this afternoon after water gushed into it due to incessant rains," a senior police official said.
The vessel, originally owned by Sahara India, was chartered to Trinity Leisure which had berthed it at Western India Shipyard near MPT for repairs and converting it into a floating hotel.
The ship's agent Sunil Prabhu told reporters that various authorities, including Indian Coast Guard, MPT, district administration and police swung into action last night as the ship began tilting precariously.
According to Coast Guard DIG Manoj Badkar, the ship was docked at Western India Shipyard Limited since 2014.
"I believe that it was brought for some repairs which never started and since last evening the ship started reporting water ingress," he said.
