Lokdas Sahu, a district official, told reporters that his son Pritam Kumar and 16 other Indians were among the passengers held hostage by pirates.

Pritam is employed with a Mumbai-based shipping firm.

"The company had sent him to Dubai on January 31. He was then sent for training in a Nigerian ship on March 1. It was then the hijacking incident took place in the high seas," he said.

"Intelligence officials first contacted me on June 11 saying that the ship has been hijacked," Sahu said.

The distressed man claimed that he also received a call from his son the following day stating that they were being held hostage by pirates.

Sahu said that he would also seek the help of Rajnandgaon Lok Sabha MP Madhusudhan Yadav on the issue.
