Reddy, who won four times consecutively from Gauribidanur Assembly segment in Kolar district bordering Andhra Pradesh, filed his nomination papers today for the election to the post.
He was accompanied by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and President of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee G Parameshwara among others.
With numbers stacked against them, the opposition JDS and BJP which have 40 MLAs each in the 224-member House, chose not to field their nominee for the post.
Congress, which ousted BJP from power in the assembly elections in May last, has a strength of 122.
