Shopkeeper shot dead by robbers in Delhi's Fatehpur Beri

A 47-year-old provision store owner was shot dead allegedly by unidentified persons while he was trying to avert a robbery bid in south Delhi's Fatehpur Beri area, police said on Friday.

The deceased has been identified as Ravi Kumar Singhal, a resident of Dera village, they said.

Police got information regarding a firing incident at Fatehpur Beri area on Thursday at around 10:15 pm.

"Police rushed to the spot and found that Singhal, a grocery shop owner, had sustained a bullet injury. His helper Bhagwan Dass, a resident of village Dera, also got injured in the incident," Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Atul Kumar Thakur said.

One empty cartridge was recovered from the spot, the DCP said.

Singhal was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital where he was declared brought dead. He sustained a single gunshot wound.

Dass' statement was recorded and he stated that on Thursday night around 10 pm, Singhal closed his store and kept a bag containing cash on the stairs.

Meanwhile, three people came there on a motorcycle. One of them took the bag from the stairs and started running. When Singhal and Dass ran to chase them, one person fired a bullet at Singhal. They also hit Dass on his head and fled, the DCP said.

A case under relevant sections of the IPC and the Arms Act has been registered at Fatehpur Beri police station and investigation is underway to nab the accused persons, police added.
