The West Bengal Human Rights Commission today asked for a report to be submitted within three weeks into the suicide of a class IX student in Jalpaiguri district following alleged mental and physical torture by two teachers of his school.
"The SHRC has taken suo moto cognisance of the matter and asked the IG North Bengal to submit a report within three weeks. It has also asked the IG North Bengal to conduct the inquiry by an officer not below the rank of DIG," state Human Rights Commission joint secretary Sujay Haldar said.
Jaideep Mukherjee, a student of Fanindra Deb Institution, was found hanging in his home on May 27.
Jaideep's father had lodged an FIR that evening naming Head Master Sujan Somroy and class teacher Anubrata Roy for allegedly torturing the boy, causing him to take the extreme step.
According to the FIR, Jaideep was mentally and physically tortured by the two teachers after a bench on which he and four others boys were sitting, broke two weeks ago.
The police said complaints of torture by the accused teachers were not new.
