The simplicity of the upcoming film is what appealed to the 30-year-old actor, who is the son of veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty.
"'Ishqedarriyaan' is a simple, fresh take on love. I am playing Aagam Diwan in the film. He is a self-made millionaire who believes that everything can be achieved with hard work. He meets Luvleen, a simple village school teacher, who changes his world as he falls in love with her," Mahaakshay told PTI.
"I was touched when I read the script as the characters are very relatable," he added.
The actor was last seen in "Enemmy" in 2013.

When asked why there was a long gap between the last film and "Ishqedarriyaan", Mahaakshay said,"Offers did come my way during this time but none were striking enough. I want to go for quality rather than quantity."
The young actor is still to make a mark in Bollywood. He made his debut in the industry with 2008 film "Jimmy".
"I am used to the burden of comparison (with my father) and high expectations but I am not worried about challenges and adversities. It only makes me humble, focused and stronger. I am content," he said.
"I have been consciously taking out time for pursuing my other interests like mixed martial arts, astronomy, creative writing, among other hobbies. Education is a continuous lifelong process."
The movie is slated to release on May 15.
