SIT faces uphill task as Muzaffarnagar-riot cases rise to 400

The number of cases registered in connection with last month's Muzaffarnagar riots has risen to over 400, proving to be quite a task for the SIT team of Uttar Pradesh government to probe into the incidents.

According to police, the number of cases registered has increased to 405 which include that of loot, damage to property, rape and murder.

Of the total cases, 25 were registered in Shamli while five in Baghpat districts.

According to sources, the Special Investigation Team constituted by the Uttar Pradesh government is facing difficulty in recording the statements of victims and collecting evidence with so many cases registered.

The team which started its investigations on September 25 has already received more than 490 written statements, the sources said.

The commission had visited Muzaffarnagar, Shamli, Meerut, Baghpat and Saharanpur and inspected the riot-affected areas.

The communal clashes in Muzaffarnagar and adjoining areas claimed 62 lives and displaced over 40,000 people.
