Special Investigation Team probing Muzaffarnagar riots has approached a local court seeking arrest warrants against six persons for their alleged involvement in six cases of gang-rape during the clashes.
So far, the SIT has identified 22 persons out of 27 accused in the rape cases. All the accused are on the run.
The agency approached the Chief Judicial Magistrate court yesterday for the warrant. CJM Narendra Kumar has posted the matter for tomorrow.
The move comes two days after Supreme Court's notice to the Uttar Pradesh government and the Centre on a petition by the six women, who claim they were gang-raped in the early September communal violence in Muzaffarnagar.
Meanwhile, the SIT has named 245 people in the charge sheet filed by it in 32 different riot cases in Muzaffarnagar and neighbouring areas, Additional SP Manoj Jha told PTI here.
SIT has sent a list of 639 accused in different cases, including gang-rape cases, to arrest them, the police officer said.
So far, 303 accused have been arrested, the officer said.
