"A six-member special investigation team has been constituted to probe the attack on Amarnath pilgrims at Batengoo in Anantnag on Monday," Inspector General of Police (Kashmir Zone) Muneer Ahmad Khan told PTI.
The SIT, headed by the deputy inspector general (DIG) of South Kashmir, will have Senior Superintendent of Police (Anantnag) Altaf Ahmad Khan and a deputy superintendent of police (DSP) as members, Khan said.
"The SIT has been formed for expeditious and thorough investigation into the case," he added.
The attack drew widespread condemnation from all shades of opinion in the valley, including separatist groups.
Police blamed the Lashkar-e-Taiba for the deadly attack, but the outfit denied any involvement.
