In a keenly contested primary election for picking the candidate for Wardha Lok Sabha constituency in Maharashtra, Sagar Meghe today defeated Charulata Tokas by 46 votes.
Meghe, a former BJP Member of Legislative Council and son of the sitting Congress MP Datta Meghe, polled 600 votes against Tokas, daughter of the late Rajasthan Governor Prabha Rau, who got 554 votes.
Wardha and Latur are the two Lok Sabha constituencies in Maharashtra chosen by Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi for this mode of candidate selection.
The primary at Latur will be held on March 13.
Congress observers Kunal Banerejee and Rudra Raju announced the results in the evening.
Earlier, speaking to reporters, Datta Meghe said the primaries should have been conducted at least six months in advance.
He said he had decided not to contest elections any longer due to the age, and wanted to hand over the reins to Sagar, his eldest son, in Wardha.
