Six Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) supporters, including personnel secretary of the ruling party MLA Yudhvir Singh Judeo, were arrested for allegedly thrashing a Congress leader during the second phase of polls in the Janjgir-Champa district of Chhattisgarh, the police said today.
Those arrested in connection with the case are Satish Jaiswal, personnel secretary of sitting BJP MLA Yudhveer Singh Judeo, Hemant Patel, Ashok Patnayak, Sunil Soni, Feku Nishad and Sandip Singh, the police said, adding that efforts are on to nab the other attackers.
Station House Officer of Dabhra police station Umesh Mishra has been taken away from duty (sent to police lines) after he was found guilty of dereliction of duty, in connection with the case, the police said.
"The action was taken after a complaint by Dabhra Nagar panchayat chairman Anil Chandra," Janjgir-Champa Superintendent of Police Sheikh Arif Hussain said.
According to the police, in the wee hours of November 19, Anil Chandra and his associate quarrelled with the BJP district president Hemant Patel when the latter and his supporters allegedly distributed liquor to voters in Chandrapur assembly constituency before the second phase of polling.
Heated arguments between then turned into a clash, after which BJP workers allegedly thrashed Chandra and his friend Tushar Vaishnav, the police said.
Later, they were also dragged to a nearby police station and again thrashed severely inside the police station, the police said.
