She had turned 110 on January 25. But following the death of a member in the family, the celebrations were postponed for today, family sources said.

Amidst the flash of still and TV video cameras, Rujjammal, healthy even at this age, cut a birthday cake and distributed it among her family members and guests.

She said "consuming milk, curd and ghee regularly were the reasons" for her "healthiness and activeness. Besides, I never sit idle and continue to work in the field."

She had 10 daughters and five sons, of which only five daughters are surviving, the eldest being 78 years old and the youngest 56 years. She has 125 great-grandchildren.

The family's youngest is a one-and-half-year-old boy in the sixth generation, the sources said, adding, the grand old lady easily recognises every member of the family.

Todas are the most ancient tribe in the Nilgiri hills. They have their own language and worship nature. There are nearly 1,900 Todas in the district.
