Six Lankans held with fake Indian currency at IGI airport

Six Sri Lankan nationals were today held for allegedly carrying fake Indian currency notes worth Rs 28,000 at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport here.
The six Lankans, who were scheduled to travel to Mumbai on a domestic airline, were intercepted and detained by the security officials of the CISF at around 11 am after they acted on a tip-off.
Two Sri Lankans, according to CISF, were intercepted initially at a ticketing counter right outside the terminal 1D of IGI airport on suspicion and two fake currency notes of Rs 1,000 were recovered from them.
"These two notes were found to be fake. Later, 26 similar fake notes of the same denomination were recovered by personnel of our airport security group," Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) spokesperson Hemendra Singh said.

Singh added that there were four other nationals in the same group who were later apprehended on the directions of the two who were held initially.
A total of 28 fake currency notes having a face value of Rs 28,000 were recovered from them.

"On further enquiry, they (Sri Lankans) informed that they were in business of textile products in Dubai and frequently visited Delhi and Mumbai," Singh said.
They were handed over to Delhi police for further action, he said.
The foreign nationals claimed that they were not aware about the genuiness of the notes but their statements are being verified by the police, a senior airport security officer said.
