Six Maoists get RI for anti-govt activities

A court today sentenced six Maoists, arrested in 2007, to various terms of rigorous imprisonment for planning to disturb peace and indulge in illegal and anti-government activities.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Vijayakumar sentenced Sundaramurthy, the leader of the gang, to seven years RI and slapped a fine of Rs 300 on him.
The second accused Ranjith was sentenced to six years RI and slapped with the same fine amount, while the third, Vivek, was sentenced to five years RI and slapped a fine of Rs 400.
The fourth accused Muthuselvam was sentenced to three years and nine months RI and slapped a fine of Rs 400.
The other two were each sentenced to three months imprisonment and fined Rs 100 each.
The six Maoists were arrested since June 26, 2007 after they were found moving around suspiciously in Kumakarai Forest area and planning to cause disturbance to public peace and indulge in illegal and anti-government activities.
The charge sheet was later filed against them under the arms act and for providing arms training.
The judge also appreciated 'Q' branch Deputy Superintendent of Police Sethuraman for making out a clean charge sheet and proving the charges against the Maoists.
