Six people were arrested from neighbouring Navi Mumbai for allegedly placing bets on an IPL game, police said today.
Officials said that the six were nabbed after a police team, acting on a tip-off, raided a hotel in Navi Mumbai on Saturday while an IPL game between Delhi Daredevils and Royal Challengers Bangalore was underway.
"The persons arrested were accepting and placing bets online. We have arrested the six under sections of the Bombay Prevention of Gambling Act, the Indian Telegraph Act and the Indian Penal Code," Tushar Doshi, deputy commissioner of police, Navi Mumbai Crime Branch, said.
He identified those arrested as Rakesh Kondre, Abhijit Kolekar, Krishna Sagat, all from Pune, Ganesh Mane and Kishore Rihal from Navi Mumbai and Dharmesh Gala from Mumbai.
They were presented before a magistrate who remanded them in police custody till May 17, he said.
He said three laptops, 27 mobile phones, 27 sim cards, voice recorder, two vehicles and cash, all cumulatively worth Rs 39.29 lakh, was seized from them.
The DCP said that a case had been registered at Vashi police station and further investigations were underway.
