District Forest officer Dahrmadas Rai said a farmer was attacked by the animal in the morning when he went to his field at Mechua village.
The wounded man was spotted by others, who took him away.
The animal then attacked curious onlookers who had gathered in the area and injured five others, including a teenaged boy, he said adding the injured were taken to Jhargram hospital.
Rai said a large number of forest department personnel equipped with a cage, net, searchlight and tranquiliser have reached the spot to capture the animal.
