The six zonal police stations in the city, which have been functioning under the tutelage of their bigger counterparts, will be operating as independent entities from July 17.
Proposals in this regard had been pending since long and it was due to the sustained efforts of Police Commissioner Amit Garg that the State Government issued an order on July 9 approving the upgrading of zonal stations as independent police stations, said DCP (Zone-I) C M Trivikram Varma today.
With this move, the Visakhapatnam Commissionerate will now have 23 police stations. The biggest city in Andhra is slowly gaining more importance in terms of police department.
Addressing the media, Varma said the new stations are located at Maharanipeta, Duvvada, Dwaraka, Airport, MVP Colony and Arilova.
Six Station House Officers, 12 Sub-inspectors, 48 Head Constables and 228 Constables would be distributed and deployed at these places, the DCP said.
The SHOs will file their own FIRs. However, the new stations will continue to function from their respective premises till an alternative arrangement is made for relocation.
Proposals have also been sent to the Government to establish separate police stations for traffic, cyber crime, Central Crime Station and task force for effective policing in the port city which is witnessing rapid growth, he added.
