SKIL Ports and Logistics plans to invest Rs 1,000 crore to build a multipurpose terminal at Karanja near here over the next two years.
The proposed terminal would be developed on a 200-acre land parcel at Karanja, off the financial capital's eastern coast, and would have a sea frontage of 1,000 metres.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis laid the foundation stone for the port today. According to an official release, it would be built at an investment of Rs 1,000 crore.
Located in neighbouring Raigad district, the proposed multipurpose terminal and port would be operational in two years, the release said.
It would be close to the country's largest container port Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) and also across the channel from the Mumbai Port.
Further details like total capacity and cargo mix at the facility were not available immediately.

At the event, Fadnavis welcomed private sector investments in various projects in Maharashtra, assuring that the state government would play the role of a "partner" in projects.
He also presided over a ceremony to improve rail connectivity for a port project.
A tripartite agreement was also signed between the Maharashtra Maritime Board, the Konkan Railway and the Sajjan Jindal-promoted JSW Jaigad Port, for a 33.7-km rail link to the port located in Ratnagiri district, which would be built at an estimated cost of Rs 775 crore, in about 30 months.
Maharashtra has a 720-km coastline, which is home to ports at Dharamtar, Dighi and Redi, among others. Experts opine that the full potential of its coastline has not been utilised.
