Skill development training made prison peaceful: SP

Skill development programmes for inmates of the Central Prison here has helped in bringing down incidents of skirmishes among them, a senior prison official said today.
The development of skill among the prisoners, taken up under the guidance of Additional Director General of Prisons J K Tripathy, had not only helped in revenue generation but also made the prison complex peaceful, Superintendent of the prison R Arivudainambi said.
The Central Prison here, which pioneered several projects including fish culture, horticulture and mushroom cultivation, had also started a market for selling the products made by the inmates, he said.
At his initiative, a special skill training programme for making sanitary napkins was conducted recently for 100 inmates in the first phase.

Fifty inmates among them were now involved in making napkins and officials had tied up with the Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation for marketing the napkins.
The inmates would get daily wages to the tune of Rs 100 apart from share in the profit.
The napkin manufacturing units would be started in more prisons in the coming years, he said.
"By keeping the prisoners engaged (in such activities) most of the time, it helped us to keep the prison complex busy and peaceful, and also reduced the cost of running the prison," another official said.
