Small onion prices expects to decline marginally

The price for the good quality small onion (shallot) will prevail around Rs 28 to Rs 30 per kg during August-September, as against the current Rs 30 and farmers are recommended to take up sowing based on the price.
In its analysis the Domestic Export Market Intelligence Cell in Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, on the price behaviour of small onion in Dindigul market prevailed the last 17 years, the Cell said that as against the current farm gate price of Rs 30 at Dindigul market, the prices are likely to be around Rs 28 to Rs 30 per kg in August to September.
In Tamil Nadu, a major producer of shallot, Co-5 variety is the most preferred variety for export, which is round in shape, pink in colour, with a diameter of 27 mm and above.
The demand for seed onion for sowing is also increased with the current level of price and further price changes will depend on export demand as well as South-West Monsoon in the small onion growing districts of Tamil Nadu.
Tamil Nadu accounts for nearly 70 per cent of total area under small onion in India, where it was mainly cultivated in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh and major export destination are Malaysia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Maldives, the cell said.
