The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence today seized smuggled cigarettes worth Rs 6.92 crore from a flat at Bhiwandi in neighbouring Thane District.
"We have seized 69.26 lakh sticks of smuggled Indonesian GUDANG GARAM brand cigarettes," said a DRI official here.
The cigarette packets had statutory warning in English and Arabic, indicating that they were originally meant for the Middle East markets, he said.
As foreign-made cigarettes attract a heavy import duty, smuggling is a lucrative business, he said.
"In most cases, smugglers prefer to procure cigarettes from the UAE, Malaysia and Singapore," he added.
Officials were looking for the main accused who arranged the smuggling, he said.
