Smuggled gold, foreign currency worth Rs 31 lakh seized

Officers of Air Intelligence unit of the Customs have seized gold and foreign currency worth Rs 31 lakh from two passengers.
In the first case, a woman, who arrived from London by a Jet Airways flight on May 3, was found to be carrying 6880 sterling pounds equivalent to Rs 5.83 lakh and Indian rupees amounting to Rs 1.23 lakh undeclared, a release from Customs said here today.
In another case, a person identified as Firoz Alam Ansari, who arrived from Istanbul by a Turkish Airline yesterday, had concealed four gold bars weighing 100 grams each and US dollars 25,000, collectively valued at about Rs 24 lakh, in his baggage.
The contraband was seized under the Customs Act and the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).
