The high-altitude areas of Kashmir Valley, including the famous resorts of Gulmarg and Pahalgam, experienced fresh snowfall today, coinciding with the onset of the 40-day harshest period of winter known as Chillai-Kalan.
"Gulmarg received around five inches of snow, while Pahalgam recorded 2 cms," an official of the MeT department here said.
The MeT had predicted light to moderate snowfall in the higher reaches of the Valley today. Other areas of the Valley, including Shopian, Jawahar Tunnel and Sonamarg, also received snowfall.
There was light rainfall in Srinagar, the official said, adding that there is a possibility of snowfall during the night.
The plains in the Valley have been going through dry weather over the past two months, but the high-altitude areas received moderate snowfall on December 11 and light snowfall on Thursday.
The possibility of snowfall is maximum and most frequent during Chillai-Kalan.
