Union Social Justice Ministry has referred a case against a Uttar Pradesh-based NGO to the Law Ministry for a CBI probe for allegedly fudging documents to swindle funds allocated for the welfare of differently-abled persons.
"There is an NGO in Uttar Pradesh which is associated with a politician. We have referred the case to the law department for a CBI probe against it," Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Thaawar Chand Gehlot told reporters at a press conference here to mark 100 days of the NDA Government.
When a reporter asked him whether he was referring to the NGO said to be associated with former External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid, the minister preferred not to name the NGO or the politician against whom the ministry has recommended for a probe.
"We have requested the law department to look into our recommendations at the earliest," the Minister stated.
A sting operation by a television channel in 2012 had alleged irregularities were committed by a trust during 2009-2010 in Uttar Pradesh in the funds earmarked for differently-abled people.
"Our responsibility is to monitor whether the NGOs, which are receiving funds from us, are doing their work properly," the Minister said.
The Social Justice and Empowerment Ministry has also recommended another CBI probe about the alleged involvement of four persons in a fraud of misusing the name of an agency based at Bengaluru.
