Himanshu, who was diagnosed with thrombosis(blockage) in the intestinal veins, resulting in loss of blood supply to the most part of the organ, underwent the transplant surgery on November 24 in Medanta Medicity Hospital here.
"The teamwork required to keep Himanshu alive on total parenteral nutrition (PTN) and then take him through transplant has been phenomenal," Naresh Trehan, the hospital chairman and the chief cardiac surgeon told reporters here.
"Medanta was able to pull it off due to a rare amalgam of surgical expertise, dedicated gastroenterology and nutrition team, one of the most sophisticated laboratory services, experienced ICU and infection-control teams, and a state-of-the-art dedicated transplant ICU," Trehan said.
The transplant surgery, which continued for 10 hours, was conducted by a team of 30 doctors, led by reputed transplant surgeon Dr A S Soin. The patient was discharged after almost six weeks since the surgery.
"Patients with intestinal failure are considered candidates for transplant when total parenteral nutrition (TPN) has been tried for a while but cannot be tolerated due to its complications, and the remaining intestine cannot adapt enough to recover its function," Soin said.
