Rai, of 'Tanu Weds Manu' fame, has teamed up with southern star Dhanush and Sonam for 'Raanjhanaa'.
"I think Sonam is under-utilised. The kind of performance she has given in this film is amazing. The way she was involved with the film was tremendous. Wait and watch Sonam," Rai told PTI.
Sonam, daughter of actor Anil Kapoor, made her debut with 'Saawariya' in 2007 which did not do well at the box office. After a string of unsuccessful films including 'Thank You', 'Mausam' and 'Players', she is now gearing up for 'Raanjhanaa', where she will be seen essaying the role of a girl-next-door.
The world may be familiar with Sonam's fashionista side, but the director reveals that in reality she is a simple girl.
"After meeting and talking to Sonam and her family while narrating her this film, I realised that she is a middle class girl. She is next-door-girl. She behaves in the same way as any girl would behave," Rai said.
'Raanjhanaa', slated to release on June 21, is a story of a Hindu boy who falls in love with a Muslim girl.
