"Youths must follow Barphukan's ideals and take inspiration from his spirit of patriotism to protect and defend Assam from present day challenges," Sonowal said on the occasion of 'Lachit Divas' observed to mark the general's birthday.
The Chief Minister called for more studies to understand the indigenous warfare techniques of the Ahom General who defeated the Moghul army many times through sheer ingenuity and guile.
He also thanked former Assam governor Late Lt Gen (Retd) S K Sinha for his role in initiating the Lachit Medal at National Defence Academy (NDA) which is bestowed on the best passing out cadet.
"The very idea of the state that Lachit defended so relentlessly must never be compromised and younger generation will have to work hard to bring about positive changes to the society," the Chief Minister added.
He also emphasised the need to protect the unity of the greater Assamese society and urged people to defeat the evil designs of anti social elements bent on dividing the society.
