"The Brahmaputra Board and Water Resource Department must work in close coordination to effectively manage floods ravaging the island year after year," the Chief Minister said while chairing a review meeting on various developmental activities and conservation efforts of the world's largest river island - Majuli.
Sonowal observed that only three months were there to complete all embankment and flood related activities before April and Commissioner and asked Secretary, Water Resource Department, Hemanta Narzary to proceed on a visit to Majuli along with a team of officials to make a ground survey of the ongoing projects and fix a time frame for their completion.
The Chief Minister directed the Water Resource Department and Brahmaputra Board to blacklist all contractors who fail to complete work within time and who deliver substandard quality.
Referring to allegations of corruption in PWD department in Majuli, the Chief Minister directed top officials of the department to act swiftly to root out corruption from the department and complete 191 km of road that has been earmarked under Pradhan Mantri Gramin Sadak Yojna at an early date.
road-cum-embankment has been planned around Majuli and various technicalities were being looked into for this project.
He also directed the Cultural Affairs Department to prepare a proposal in consultation with UNESCO technocrats for the 'World Heritage Site' tag for the river island.
