The buoy with satellite connectivity was launched at a depth of 15 feet and would specifically help the fishing community, a release from Puducherry Multi Purpose Social Service Society, coordinator of the experiment said.
It said the buoy was the fourth after the launch of the first one in May 2007.
Details would be recorded through VHF antenna at PMSSS here and a receiver had been fixed to collect information in the form of graphs and numerical data. These would be modulated and validated by INCOIS and sent back to PMSSS Ocean Weather Dissemination Centre, the release said.
PMSS sources said the buoy weighs 250 kg while the platform on which it is set weighs 500 kg.
The fishing communities in Puducherry, Villupuram and Cuddalore would stand to benefit by the deployment of the buoy. The previous three buoys were hit by cyclones, including the cyclone Thane in 2011.
