The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) was presented the National Energy Conservation Award by President Ram Nath Kovind today for its LED replacement project.
SDMC Commissioner Punit Goel received the first prize for conservation of energy through LED replacement in municipal sector, said a senior official of the civic body.
The LED programme, claimed to be the largest of its kind in the world, involved replacement of 2.80 lakh sodium-vapor lights with energy efficient LEDs, reducing total connected energy load from 37.50 MW to 18.31 MW, the official said.
The award was presented at a function held at the Vigyan Bhavan on the occasion of National Energy Conservation Day.
SDMC saves around nine crore units of energy annually under the Street Lighting National Programme launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the official said.
The total saving on account of energy consumption and line maintenance will be approximately Rs 85 crore per annum, he said.
Besides, the project will result in curbing carbon dioxide emission by 65,000 ton annually, he added.
