Southern Railway Dy Chief Engr sentenced 2yrs RI

A CBI court at Madurai has sentenced a senior official of Southern Railways to two years rigorous imprisonment in a bribery case.
Southern Railways Deputy Chief Engineer K V S S P Murthy Raju was travelling with his family in Allepey-Dhanbad Express on October 17, 2008. A surprise check was conducted on board and Rs 6.65 lakh was seized from his possession, a CBI release today said.
During investigation, it was revealed that of Rs 6.65 lakh, Rs five lakh was received as bribe amount from Railway Contractor Adaikalavan who also represents C T Ramanathan and Company, the release said.
The purpose of the bribe was to allot the contract work of "provision of third line between Korukkupet and Athipattu Stations" to the company C T Ramanathan and Company, it said.
On completion of trial, Murthy Raju and Adaikalavan. were sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for two years.
A fine of Rs 70,000 was imposed on Murthy Raju and Rs 35,000 on Adaikalavan, it said.
