"Any party, whether it is Mulayam Singh Yadav's party, has its political ambition. No party will wish to sit in the opposition throughout its life," Khatri told reporters here.

He said whenever a political party sits with its workers it has to do something to encourage them, to boost their morale and strengthen it.

His remarks came against the backdrop of the SP supremo stepping up attack on Congress, saying it was neck-deep in scams and corruption and its reputation was tainted.

At the party's National Executive meeting in Kolkata, SP leaders spoke of difficulties in continuing support to UPA government if its allies start deserting it.

Khatri said, "Even we have an ambition that we are not limited to 22 Lok Sabha seats. Our ambition is that that we recreate a picture in Uttar Pradesh where we are not dependent on anyone," he said.

He said efforts were on to ensure that in the days to come dependency on regional parties end.

"There is nothing wrong if a political party has an ambition to come to the power," he said.
