"The latest benefit from space programmes was the early prediction of devastating 'Hudhud' cyclone in Andra Pradesh, that enabled authorities take precautionary steps to avoid damage,", he said at a function organised by the state government at the secretariat to honour scientists behind the 'Mars Mission.'
Areas such as telemedicine, tele-education and mapping of natural resources were some of the other advantages of the space programme, he said.
Radhakrishnan also said the country was celebrating the 50th year of space programme, which started with a launch of small rocket from its Centre at Thumba here, by successfully completing 'Mangalyan mission'.
Besides Chandy, State Ministers K M Mani, Aryadan Mohammed and Anoop Jacob spoke.
The Chief Minister later presented mementos to 16 scientists who worked on the Mars Mission.
