Spain wants France to extradite a longtime chief of the defunct Basque militant separatist group ETA, whose arrest last month in a French Alpine town ended 17 years on the run.

Spanish government spokeswoman Isabel Celaa said after a weekly Cabinet meeting Friday that it had decided to request that Josu Ternera be sent to Spain to stand trial.

Ternera is wanted for alleged crimes against humanity and multiple killings.

He was convicted in absentia in 2017 in France for involvement in a terrorist group and sentenced to eight years in prison. He can request a new trial.

ETA, whose initials stand for "Basque Homeland and Freedom" in the Basque language, killed more than 850 people during its campaign to create an independent state. It disbanded last year.
