Spain assures help to Maharashtra for high-speed railway

"Spain will cooperate in the industrial investment in Maharashtra to upgrade transport system, electricity and telecommunication services. We will also conduct a study to start high-speed railway in Maharashtra," Margallo, who is leading a delegation, told Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan here, official sources said.

Chavan said Maharashtra has all the basic infrastructure facilities. To facilitate cooperation, the state government would start Spanish language courses in the universities.

"Maharashtra government will also start Spanish language courses to overcome hurdles on the industrial development front," Chavan assured the delegation, according to the state government's statement.

Of the total foreign investment in the country, 35 per cent comes to Maharashtra alone, Chavan told the delegation.

"Maharashtra government has given priority to transportation, housing development, electricity, construction of dams....Spain should make investment in these areas," Chavan said.

Rural Development Minister Jayant Patil said Spain should provide technical support for the high-speed railway.

Industries Minister Narayan Rane, Protocol Minister Suresh Shetty, India's Ambassador to Spain Sunil Lal, state's Chief Secretary Jayanth Kumar Banthia and other top government officers were also present.
