Spain must fend off Catalan independence bid: king

Spain's King Felipe VI today threw his weight behind efforts to fend off Catalan leaders' bid for independence, urging the state authorities to defend "constitutional order."
Felipe broke with his previously measured tone, warning that "it is the responsibility of the legitimate state powers to ensure constitutional order", in a stern televised address two days after Catalans held a banned independence referendum marred by police violence.
