Joan Faus Vitoria, the mayor of Ador in the province of Valencia, has formally designated the hours between 2pm and 5pm as a time for locals to take their afternoon siestas.
"Everything closes between 2pm and 5pm. Bars, shops, the swimming pool, everything," a town hall spokesman told The Local.
Although Spain is known for its siestas, it is the first time that the afternoon naps have been made official.
Parents have been told to make sure their children are kept indoors and people are being asked not to make any unnecessary noise.
Vitoria wanted to introduce the nap time so that farm workers can have a break during the hottest time of the day for the town and expects employers to comply.
