Assam assembly Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami today reprimanded Congress MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha for coming to the House wearing a t-shirt bearing some writings in Bengali, and did not allow him to speak until he changed it.
The moment Purkayastha stood to speak after the House reassembled for the post-lunch session, Goswami did not allow him to say a single word until he changes his t-shirt.
"With this dress, I cannot allow you to speak. I request you to please change your dress. Please follow the dress code. I said this in the morning also though I did not mention any name," he sternly told the Congress member.
"If you want to speak anything, please give it to your leader and he will speak for you," he added.
Purkayastha the changed the t-shirt and wore a formal shirt before rejoining the proceedings.
Earlier addressing a press conference during the day, Goswami said there was a laid down dress code for the MLAs and they should follow that.

"We should not be dressed in such a manner that it sends the impression that we are casual about the House. A person's dress in bedroom and drawing room are different. Naturally, the dress code has to be followed," Goswami said.
In the House, he said he had given up his love for tie-suit and switched to the Nehru coat after becoming the Speaker.
