Replying to a calling attention of K N A Khader (IUML) for the necessity to set up Special Courts in the state for time-bound completion of the prosecution proceedings of political murders, Chandy said in the assembly that there was no explanation in the Criminal Procedure Code on what constitute a "political murder".
However, he said the government would discuss with the High Court methods to speed up cases relating to political murders.
Giving details of political murders in the state, he said a total of 130 political murders took place in the state since 2001. Seventy six political murder cases were under different stages in courts. A case registered in 1997 was the oldest case now under trial, he said.
Demanding Special Courts for conducting political murder cases, Khader said prosecution proceedings of such cases were being delayed due to "various reasons."
A speedy trial and punishment of the guilty was necessary to check these types of crimes, he said.
