A special purpose vehicle (SPV) to speed up the suburban railway will come into effect here within a month, the Karnataka government announced today.
An official press release said the decision to set up the SPV was taken at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy.
The State government would invest 51 per cent of the cost of the project while the rest would be borne by the railways, it said.
The project aims at making the optimum use of the 444-km railway line, expansion of railway network and electrification along the railway track, the release said.
The government said the use of the sub-urban railways would help people to save time and money besides reducing traffic on roads.
NITI Ayog member Dr V K Saraswat, deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara, Chief Secretary T M Vijay Bhaskar, Ministers senior bureaucrats of the State, railway officials and a few experts were present at the meeting, the release said.
