Budget carrier SpiceJet today said it has moved its cargo operations to the common user facility at the Airports Authority of India-run Chennai Airport, which provides services such as customs, airlines, agents as well as regulatory and facilitating agencies under one roof.
SpiceJet is the first and the only airline in the country to use the Common User Terminal (CUT) for its cargo operations from Chennai, a release said.
SpiceJet would be engaging its Boeing 737 and Bombardier Q400s for providing the service, which is currently available at Mumbai, Delhi and a few other airports, besides Chennai, within its domestic network, the release said.
Moreover, the common user facility would help in centralising the movement of domestic cargo and standardising the cost, the airline said.
"The new terminal will enable SpiceJet to renew its service levels to greater heights as goods can now be received much closer to the departure time of the flight, facilitating JIT (Just in Time) management practice and thereby reducing the cut off time to accept cargo," said SpiceJet Senior Vice President, Kamal Hingorani.
The move would also encourage optimum utilisation of airport infrastructure as the airline does not have to invest individually in facilities such as X-ray machines, warehouse, among others, and can avail the same provided by AAI, he added.
