Having flown Boeing's narrow body planes -B737s RPT B737- for 10 years, budget carrier SpiceJet now plans to induct European aviation major Airbus aircraft in its fleet.
The Gurgaon-based carrier, currently has a fleet of 35 aircraft with 20 of them Boeing 737s and rest Bombardier Q400s.
"SpiceJet plans to replace two of its Boeing 737s with Airbus A320 planes. These aircraft are likely to be inducted in the fleet in the coming months," a source said today.
In April this year, the no-frills airline, which started operations in 2005, had dry leased three Boeing 737s RPT Boeing 737s from the Czech-based firm TVS for a three-month period.
SpiceJet Chairman and Managing Director Ajay Singh had last week said that the airline plans to add six to seven new aircraft by end of this fiscal, 2015-16.
"Besides, the airline has also decided to convert the wet lease into dry lease and for a longer period," the source said.
Singh, the original co-founder, took back the reins of the budget carrier from the then promoter Maran family under a revival plan in January this year after a major crisis had hit the company late last year.
So far, the new promoter has invested Rs 800 crore in the carrier as part of his Rs 1,500 crore fund infusion plan in phased manner.
