Calangute-Baga-Sinquerim belt in North Goa which is overrun with stray cows and dogs will soon get a special shelter for these animals.
"Many tourists meet with accident in the darkness everyday due to stray dogs and cows on beaches. You can confirm with local hospitals about injured riders being admitted there on daily basis," Deputy Speaker of Goa Assembly and Calangute MLA Michael Lobo told reporters here.
Goa government, in association with animal welfare activists and an NGO, has decided to construct 'Centre of Excellence for Stray Animals' to deal with the problem, Lobo said.
The facility will be spread across 15,000 square metres and have a cattle pound, a shelter for stray dogs and a veterinary hospital.
"The entire project will cost Rs 10 crore and Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has assured financial help," Lobo said, adding that an NGO working for animal welfare would be asked to manage the facility.
Calangute-Baga-Sinquerim belt is famous for its beaches and the nightlife.

Max Patel, an animal welfare activist, said several people are willing to get associated with such projects.
"Garbage on the beaches was one of the problems which was sorted out with a waste treatment plant. Now it is high time we cleared the beaches of stray animals who can be sent to a care facility," he said.
The NGO (yet to be selected) which will manage the Centre of Excellence will also sterilize the stray animals, he said.
