The Panipat lad set the World U-20 & senior national records with a throw of 86.48m at Bydgoszcz and Goel said the whole country is proud of his achievement.
"We are proud of him. He has created a U-20 world record throwing 86.48m. He also broke the London Olympic record, which was around 84m. We are sad that he could not qualify for the Rio Olympics because the deadline for qualification was over and he had some problem in his back in April. But we are hopeful that he will win a medal at 2020 Tokyo Olympics," he said.
The 18-year-old from Khandra village in Haryana broke the old mark of 84.69 metres held by Latvian Zigismunds Sirmais by nearly two metres.
Chopra is the first Indian athlete to set a world record at any level. He surpassed his own previous personal best of 82.23 achieved at the South Asian Games in Guwahati earlier this year.
