Carcass of a two-year-old spotted deer, an endangered species, was today found at a village near Melur, about 30 km from here, forest officials said.
They said the deer was found with deep neck injuries at Kollipatti village and felt it might have been hit by a speeding vehicle or mauled to death by street dogs when it came out from the jungles in search of water.
Revenue officials said four spotted deer had died within a month on the stretch when they came in search of water.
They said it was not clear if the forest department had been given any funds for providing water facility to the deer in the forest area itself or not.
But locals averred that no such facility had been provided in the area and said they give water to the deer if they venture to their homes.
